SGPA to CGPA calculator

Enter each semester's SGPA and its total credits from your grade sheets. Leave unused rows empty.

SGPA needed next semester

Calculated in your browser. Your grades are not uploaded or saved.

Then convert your CGPA to a percentage

Type the SGPA and the total credits of each semester you have finished. The calculator gives your CGPA as a credit-weighted average, which is how the UGC's Choice Based Credit System guidelines define it and how most Indian universities that follow CBCS compute it. A semester with more credits counts for more, so a plain average of your SGPAs is usually a little off. The plain average is shown next to it so you can see the difference.

Below that, enter a target CGPA and the credits of your next semester to see the SGPA you need to reach it, or whether it is out of reach in one semester. Your official CGPA is always the one printed on your grade sheet; use this to check it or to plan ahead.

The formula

CGPA = (SGPA1 x C1 + SGPA2 x C2 + ... ) / (C1 + C2 + ...), where C is the total credits of that semester.

Source: UGC, Guidelines on Adoption of Choice Based Credit System, section 7 (Computation of SGPA and CGPA). It defines SGPA as the credit-weighted average of a semester's course grade points and CGPA as the credit-weighted average of the SGPAs, both rounded to two decimal places.

SGPA needed next semester = (target x (credits so far + next credits) - credit points so far) / next credits.

Worked examples

  • SGPA 8.0 with 20 credits and 9.0 with 25 credits: (160 + 225) / 45 = 8.56. A plain average would say 8.50.
  • Target: CGPA 8.56 after 45 credits, next semester 22 credits, target 8.75: you need (8.75 x 67 - 385) / 22 = 9.15.

When your university's number may differ

Some universities compute CGPA directly from every course's grade points rather than from rounded SGPAs, some leave out failed, audit or non-credit courses, and some count only credits earned. These change the second decimal place now and then. If your university publishes its own regulation, follow it.

This tool does not turn CGPA into a percentage: that needs your board's or university's own formula. Use the CGPA to percentage converter, which lists only formulas we could trace to the issuing body.

How to use the SGPA to CGPA calculator

FAQ

How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?
Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. That is the UGC CBCS method.
Can I just average my SGPAs?
Only if every semester has the same credits. Otherwise the plain average is slightly wrong; the calculator shows both.
Where do I find semester credits?
On your grade sheet or marks card, usually as total credits or credits registered for the semester.
Why is my official CGPA slightly different?
Your university may compute it from course grade points directly, round differently, or leave out some courses. The grade sheet is the official figure.
Does this give me a percentage?
No. Converting CGPA to percentage needs your board's or university's own formula. Use the CGPA to percentage converter.
Is my data saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Only an anonymous count that the tool was used is recorded.
