There is no single national formula for turning a CGPA into a percentage. Each board or university publishes its own, and the same CGPA can mean a different percentage at two institutions. Pick the formula your marksheet or university uses, type your CGPA, and the converter shows the percentage. Type a percentage in the second box to see the CGPA it corresponds to under the same formula.
We only list formulas we could trace to the board or university itself, or to its regulations. If yours is not here, do not borrow another university's formula: check your grade sheet, the back of your consolidated marksheet, or your examination section. When an admission form or employer gives its own conversion rule, that rule wins over any calculator, including this one.
Formulas included and where they come from
- CBSE (Class 10 under the CCE grading scheme): overall indicative percentage = 9.5 x CGPA, and a subject's indicative percentage = 9.5 x its grade point. Source: CBSE Circular 24/2010 and the 2014 performance profile circular. CBSE calls this an indicative figure, not your actual marks. Newer CBSE marksheets show marks, and a CBSE notice of 30 November 2023 says the Board does not calculate percentages itself; the admitting institution or employer does.
- VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University), 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes: percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. Source: the CGPA standard formula page on vtu.ac.in and the 2017-18 B.E. regulations, which use a CGPA of 8.20 (74.5%) as the worked example.
- Anna University: percentage of marks = CGPA x 10. This is the rule quoted from the Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021 (clause 15.5.2) and an examinations office letter of July 2021 covering R-2015, R-2018 and R-2019. Autonomous colleges affiliated to Anna University set their own rules.
- Mumbai University, 10-point CBCS: percentage = 7.1 x CGPA + 11, rounded up to the next whole number. Source: the University's June 2017 conversion circular. Treat this as historical: a January 2026 circular is reported to have replaced it with a marks-based calculation by your college for Arts, Science, Commerce and Management. Engineering used a different formula, which is not included here.
- Plain x 10: listed because many people use it as a rough guide. It is not an official rule for any board above, so only use it if your institution says so.
Worked examples
- CBSE: CGPA 9.4 x 9.5 = 89.3%. Reverse: 76% / 9.5 = CGPA 8.0.
- VTU: CGPA 8.20 gives (8.20 - 0.75) x 10 = 74.5%. Reverse: 60% gives 60 / 10 + 0.75 = CGPA 6.75.
- Anna University: CGPA 7.4 x 10 = 74%.
- Mumbai University: CGPA 8.0 gives 7.1 x 8.0 + 11 = 67.8%, which the circular rounds up to 68%.
- SGPA to CGPA: semester 1 SGPA 8.0 with 20 credits and semester 2 SGPA 9.0 with 25 credits give (8.0 x 20 + 9.0 x 25) / 45 = 385 / 45 = 8.56. A plain average would say 8.50.
How SGPA becomes CGPA
SGPA is your grade point average for one semester. Under the UGC credit system that most Indian universities follow, CGPA is the credit-weighted average of the SGPAs: multiply each SGPA by that semester's credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. A semester with more credits counts for more. If every semester has the same credits, the weighted and plain averages are equal.
The converter uses the weighted method when every filled row has credits. If any credits are missing it shows a plain average and says so. Your official CGPA is the one on your grade sheet; universities round to two decimals and some exclude failed or repeated courses, so small differences are normal.
How to use the converter
- Choose your board or university from the list. The formula appears under it.

- For SGPA to CGPA, enter each semester's SGPA and credits; press Add semester for more rows.
- Copy the result into your form, and keep the formula's name with it in case someone asks how you got it.

FAQ
- How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
- Use the formula of the board or university that issued the CGPA. CBSE uses 9.5 x CGPA, VTU uses (CGPA - 0.75) x 10, and Anna University uses CGPA x 10. Pick yours above and type your CGPA.
- Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5?
- CBSE's circulars give 9.5 x CGPA as an indicative percentage but do not explain the number in the circular itself. It is an estimate, not your actual marks.
- Can I use CGPA x 10 for any university?
- Only if your university says so. Some do, like Anna University, but VTU, CBSE and Mumbai University use different formulas, and the difference can be several percentage points.
- How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
- Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits. If all semesters have equal credits, a simple average gives the same answer.
- Is my data saved?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our server. Only an anonymous count that the tool was used is recorded.
- What if my percentage comes out above 100 or below 0?
- That means the input is outside the range the formula was designed for, for example a very low CGPA under VTU's formula. The converter flags it rather than hiding it.
