Convert WebP to JPG

Open the Image Converter

Many websites now serve pictures as WebP, so when you right-click and save an image you often get a .webp file. That is fine in a browser, but upload forms, older versions of Office, some printers and photo kiosks still expect JPG or PNG. Converting the file is the quickest way to make it acceptable again.

The Image Converter on this site opens a WebP, JPEG or PNG file and saves it as JPEG, PNG or WebP. JPEG and WebP output use quality 90. The pixel width and height stay the same; only the file format changes. It handles one file at a time, needs no account, and the upload is processed over HTTPS for the request and then discarded.

What changes when WebP becomes JPG

We tested the live converter on 2026-10-09 with three kinds of WebP file. Here is what happened, so you know what to expect:

  • A photo: a 1280 x 1920 WebP of 319 KB became a 1280 x 1920 JPG of 546 KB. JPG files are often larger than the WebP they came from, because WebP compresses better. If the form has a size limit, compress the JPG afterwards.
  • A logo with a transparent background: the transparent area became white in the JPG, because JPG cannot store transparency. Choose PNG instead if you need to keep it transparent; our PNG output kept the transparency.
  • An animated WebP: the JPG contained only the first frame. JPG and PNG are still images.

Camera details stored in the file, such as EXIF data, are not copied into the converted image.

Why you ended up with a WebP file

Websites choose WebP because it makes pages load faster: the same picture is usually smaller than a JPG. When you save an image from a page, the browser keeps whatever format the site sent, so the file ends in .webp even if the site showed it next to JPG photos. Renaming the file from .webp to .jpg does not convert it. The data inside is still WebP, and a strict upload form or an older app can still reject it or fail to open it. A real conversion re-saves the pixels in the new format, which is what the converter does.

JPG or PNG: which to pick

Choose JPG for photographs, product pictures and screenshots of photos. It is accepted almost everywhere and is usually the smaller of the two for photos. Choose PNG for logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots with sharp text, and for anything with a transparent background. A PNG of a photo can be several times larger than the JPG; in our test the same photo was 3.4 MB as PNG.

Common reasons people convert WebP

  • A job, visa or exam form only accepts .jpg or .jpeg uploads.
  • An older version of Word, PowerPoint or a photo viewer will not open .webp.
  • A print shop or kiosk asks for JPG.
  • You want to edit the picture in an app that does not read WebP.

Only convert images you have the right to use. Saving a picture from a website does not give you permission to republish it.

After converting

Check three things before you upload the file: the name ends in .jpg, the pixel size is what the form wants, and the file size is under its limit. If the pixels are wrong, use Resize Image. If the file is too heavy, use the Image Compressor. If you are going the other way and want smaller files for your own website, convert JPG or PNG to WebP with the same tool.

Convert a WebP file to JPG

  1. Open the Image Converter and upload your .webp file.
  2. Set Convert to: JPEG (or PNG if you need transparency).
  3. Select Convert & Download. The file keeps its name with a .jpg ending.
  4. Open the JPG and check its size before you upload it anywhere.

FAQ

Is converting WebP to JPG free?
Yes. There is no signup and no watermark on the JPG.
Will the image lose quality?
The JPG is saved at quality 90, which looks the same as the original for most photos. JPG is a lossy format, so avoid converting the same file back and forth many times.
Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP?
WebP usually compresses better than JPG. If the result is too large for a form, run it through the Image Compressor.
What happens to a transparent background?
It becomes white in a JPG. Convert to PNG to keep the transparency.
Can I convert an animated WebP?
Only the first frame is kept, as a still JPG or PNG.
Can I convert many files at once?
No. The converter takes one image at a time.
Can I just rename .webp to .jpg?
No. Renaming changes the name, not the format inside, so some forms and apps will still reject the file. Convert it instead.
