How many pages is 1,000 words?
About two pages single-spaced, or about four pages double-spaced. That assumes the usual school and office setup: a Letter or A4 page, 12-point Times New Roman, and 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins, which fits roughly 500 words on a single-spaced page and 250 to 300 on a double-spaced one.
Page counts are always an estimate, because the font, the size, the spacing, headings and paragraph breaks all change how much fits on a page. If your assignment gives a word limit, the word count is what matters; check it with the Word Counter, which shows words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time as you type.
Words to pages chart
Estimates for 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, rounded. Arial and Calibri are wider, so expect slightly more pages.
- 250 words: about half a page single-spaced, about 1 page double-spaced.
- 500 words: about 1 page single-spaced, about 2 pages double-spaced.
- 750 words: about 1.5 pages single-spaced, about 3 pages double-spaced.
- 1,000 words: about 2 pages single-spaced, about 4 pages double-spaced.
- 1,500 words: about 3 pages single-spaced, about 6 pages double-spaced.
- 2,000 words: about 4 pages single-spaced, about 8 pages double-spaced.
- 2,500 words: about 5 pages single-spaced, about 10 pages double-spaced.
- 3,000 words: about 6 pages single-spaced, about 12 pages double-spaced.
- 5,000 words: about 10 pages single-spaced, about 20 pages double-spaced.
What changes the page count
- Line spacing: double spacing roughly halves the words per page. 1.5 spacing sits in between, at about 330 to 400 words per page.
- Font and size: 11-point text fits noticeably more words than 12-point, and wide fonts fit fewer.
- Paragraphs and headings: every short paragraph leaves part of a line empty, and every heading takes a line or two. Dialogue and lists use more pages than solid prose.
- Title pages, reference lists and tables: these usually do not count toward a word limit but do add pages.
How long does 1,000 words take to read or say?
The Word Counter uses 238 words per minute for silent reading and 130 words per minute for speaking. At those rates 1,000 words takes about 4 minutes 12 seconds to read and about 7 minutes 42 seconds to say aloud, which is useful when a speech or presentation has a time limit rather than a page limit.
Page limit or word limit: which to trust
If you are given a page limit, format the document the way the instructions say and look at the page count in your word processor; our counter cannot see your fonts or margins, so it does not show pages. If you are given a word limit, paste the text into the Word Counter. It splits words on spaces and line breaks, so a hyphenated word such as well-known counts as one word, and so does a contraction such as don't. Most teachers accept a small margin either side of a word limit, but ask if you are unsure.
Estimate the pages for your own text

- Divide by 500 for single-spaced pages, or by 250 to 300 for double-spaced pages.
- For the exact number, apply the required font, size and spacing in your word processor and check its page count.
