How to Resize Images for Social Media

Optimal dimensions for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn

By Ben Praveen J · September 11, 2024 · Updated February 2026

Each social platform has recommended image sizes. Using the wrong dimensions can cause awkward cropping, pixelation, or wasted space. Resizing your images to the correct specs before uploading ensures they look sharp and professional.

Why Dimensions Matter

Social networks crop and resize images automatically. If your aspect ratio doesn't match, important parts of your image may get cut off. Uploading at the recommended resolution avoids compression artifacts and ensures your graphics appear crisp on all devices.

Recommended Dimensions (2024)

  • Instagram feed (square) — 1080×1080 px. Classic 1:1 format.
  • Instagram feed (portrait) — 1080×1350 px. Good for product shots and vertical photos.
  • Instagram feed (landscape) — 1080×566 px. Less common but supported.
  • Facebook post — 1200×630 px. Shared link previews and image posts.
  • LinkedIn post — 1200×627 px. Similar to Facebook for link previews.
  • TikTok/Reels thumbnail — 1080×1920 px (9:16) for vertical video.

How to Resize

Use a free social media resizer that includes presets for each platform. Upload your image, select the platform or aspect ratio, and download the resized file. Some tools also crop to fit, which is handy when your original doesn't match the target ratio.
